2 & 3 May 2026 - Ubli, Lastovo and Vieste
The routing decision is made, and we head to the Italian side of the Adriatic. The weather forecast for the islands towards the north in Croatia shows very strong winds over the days that we need to make progress, so we are off to Italy.
Saturday was the last day of preparation, and topping up the fuel supply was needed. On visits to the town (?) of Ubli, the depth of the water at the fuel dock had been verified (just enough), so the outing of the day was a trip there for diesel, all achieved with the minimum of excitement. The fuel was (relatively) inexpensive as well, which was a bonus.
The fear that someone would have taken our prime spot on the jetty while we were away proved to be unfound, in fact the only other boat in the bay left as we returned, so we were alone again. Time for walks around the bay and coffee in a nearby café.
| Time for photos on this journey. Until you get to the right angle the old submarine pen is invisible. |
Sunday 3rd was the day to cross back to Italy, and the lines had been slipped by 7:15. The conditions changed through the day from very little wind, to 20+ knots and back down again. At the height of the wind, with 2 reefs in both the main and the jib, we were still flying along. The timings for putting in and shaking out the reefs was pretty good in each case. 67 nautical miles in less than 8.5 hours, including docking at both ends showed what good progress we had made, albeit that we ached a bit afterwards.
Vieste is a lovely harbour, but very shallow. We have been several times before and know the access route and the guys who run the jetty that we stay at. Mooring in a crosswind is never easy, but again managed comfortably enough. We were positioned next to a boat that we could lean on slightly while the lines were made, and using this "rest" proved almost unnecessary.
Dinner ashore at the "restaurant in the alley of love". We had forgotten just how strong the city's focus on love is. Always a joy.
